Dear SCAA supporters,

It's been a busy time for SCAA as we rounded out the season with an amazing fundraiser in Kuala Lumpur – SCAA Founder Carol Wolfson's 50th birthday bash. We've since recovered from the 3-day event and ready for our great fall/winter line-up of events & activities to benefit SCAA animals.

SCAA is very grateful to Carol and the other organizers of fundraising events & activities highlighted in the News Update below – their generosity is certainly timely as we have already surpassed the RMB100,000 mark for investment in the health and welfare of our foster and project animals this year (and it's not over yet).

The cool autumn breezes have ushered in big things for SCAA as we welcome a full-time Executive Director. Lee-Anne Armstrong is no stranger to SCAA, having managed foster care (and multitasked a few other things) since 2006.

Thanks to generous new major sponsor Beth Wilson from Lemon Zest and donors Adrienne and Tom Urbanec, SCAA is able to offer a modest salary to monopolize (uh, we mean utilize!) a full-time resource to not only achieve our goals but to set a jammed-packed agenda of bigger and better things.

In addition to the great events this month, here are some of the things keeping us busy:

Save the Date! – SCAA's annual Christmas gala and Grand Raffle
Save the Date! – SCAA's annual Christmas gala and Grand Raffle with over RMB250,000 in fantastic raffles including Hyatt hotel & resort stays and more kicks off soon. Draw will take place at the party and winners not in attendance will be notified (but we hope you join us!).

The party is Saturday 3 December at The Apartment.

Grand Raffle tickets are on sale soon at PAW or contact SCAA for tickets director@scaashanghai.org.

Ongoing Education Activities - SCAA is (happily) overwhelmed with interest from students around Shanghai who want to volunteer their time to help needy animals. Check out the latest Education Focus section below for highlights of Cambridge International School's visit to our Local Project, where students learned the importance of play for happier cats.

SCAA 2012 Calendar
-Our inspiring collection of SCAA's rescued, fostered and adopted animals is now available. Pick up your calendar (RMB60 each or 2 for RMB100) at SCAA events, PAW vet clinic on Xinhua lu, Lemon Zest on Taojiang lu, Lu Shan Framing & Interiors on Hami lu or order online for delivery from new SCAA sponsor FIELDS.

Thanks for your continued support and hope to see you soon.

Regards,

The SCAA Team

3-Day Milestone Birthday Celebration & SCAA Fundraiser

A three-day birthday party? A request for donations to SCAA in lieu of gifts? We can only be talking about one inspired birthday gal – SCAA's Founder, Carol Wolfson.

Bringing friends and family from the U.S. China, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, Ireland, and even the Caribbean together in her (current) home of Kuala Lumpur, Carol's 50th birthday bash was truly an event to remember.

3-Day Birthday Party

A special highlight of the festivities was the party at the KLCC Aquaria. As this fantastic aquarium shut its doors to the public, Carol's birthday delegation filtered in, enjoying cocktails and nibbles (no fish of course) under the watchful eyes of nurse sharks, giant sea turtles, manta rays and a host of other marine species – it wouldn't be Carol's party without animals (or reptiles) of some sort!

3-Day Birthday Party

Rounding out the partying was an evening at the Wolfson-Garvey residence, complete with live band, Indian buffet, a silent auction of Tibetan antiques and a fundraising jewelry sale to benefit SCAA animals.

Thanks to Carol's tireless organizing, her and husband Michael's gracious hosting, and the hundred+ guests (and invitees who couldn't make it but wanted to contribute to a good cause), over RMB38,000 was raised for SCAA!

Please see our Donations Thank You section for our grateful acknowledgement to individual donors.

Next Generation of Animal Advocates Start Now

With a year-end surplus in troop fees, the Year 1 Daisies Girl Scout troop at Yew Cheung International School in Hongqiao had a decision to make – where would they like the funds to go?

SCAA is grateful the girls wanted the funds to go towards helping Shanghai's needy companion animals. Everyone at SCAA greatly appreciates their kind gesture and generous donation of RMB4,380.

When we meet such compassionate young animal lovers we can't help but feel good about a future with a new generation of adopters, foster parents, and animal advocates!

Foster Care Investment Profile: Charlie

SCAA has already surpassed the RMB100,000 mark in generously discounted PAW care for our animals so far in 2011…and it's not over yet!

By featuring our investment to get just one of SCAA's of our many foster animals healthy and adoptable we hope to underscore the critical need for the donations we request on foster care intake and adoption (as well as in general!). As financial times are tough for everyone, it's more important than ever to show how your hard-earned RMB is well spent.

Charlie may have been a tiny kitten but his vet bills (not to mention his fighting spirit) were unexpectedly big! Found when just a couple weeks old, Charlie needed intensive care and was lucky to have a foster mom able to bottle feed him every 2-3 hours.

Overcoming near starvation on abandonment, cute and cuddly Charlie then suffered a new setback – a bacterial infection in his leg. This required intensive vet care, including medicine and hospital stay.

Charlie
Charlie on rescue and (thankfully) fully recovered from infection & waiting for adoption

Even though SCAA's vet partner, PAW, provides a generous discount for our animals' care, it took over RMB5,000 to get Charlie back in tip top condition.

Donations
Foster care intake donation from Charlie's rescuers RMB 1,500
Adoption donation from Charlie's adopters RMB 500
Medical care expenses
Including health checks, treatment for fleas, worms, and bacterial infection, vaccination, and neutering subsidy for adopters RMB 5,890
- RMB 3,890

To donate towards SCAA's average RMB12,000 – RMB15,000 a month in generously discounted PAW vet care, please contact donate@scaashanghai.org.

  CANINE CORNER
sp

As SCAA (finally) bids adieu to a hectic kitten season, we've been kept busy with our new canine rescues – just in time to meet adopters back from recent holidays. Meet Gou Gou - in addition to being well trained and great with people, Gou Gou is good with cats too. Healthy, friendly & flexible sum it up!

Gou GouFound on a busy downtown street, Gou Gou, a petite female Maltese-terrier mix, took a little convincing it was in her best interest to leave the spot on the sidewalk where she may have been waiting for a previous family to find or come back for her.

Quite dirty (we thought she was gray on rescue!), and suffering from fleas and a minor bacterial skin infection, Gou Gou proved to be an easy and willing patient. She's around 1.5 years old judging from her teeth (which are in excellent condition) and her love of human companionship confirms she was previously a member of someone's family.

Gou Gou is housetrained, quiet (no barking at the doorbell etc), and a great walker on her harness and lead. She likes to hang out in (relatively) close proximity to her foster cat friend Xiao Laohu, who is more apprehensive about bridging the species gap, and she has welcomed rescued foster kittens into the fold with curiosity and enthusiasm. When it comes to her foster kitten friends, Gou Gou is “like a big sister”.

Gou Gou also enjoys that perennial Chinese dog pastime – riding around in a bicycle basket! The only thing Gou Gou isn't so fond of is being left alone, but she is increasingly confident thanks to her foster mom's training. She would make an ideal family pet and do well in a home with a friendly cat.

Gou Gou is up-to-date on flea and worm treatment, vaccinated and will be spayed soon. Interested in adopting Gou Gou or have another rescued dog in mind? Please contact dogprogram@scaashanghai.org.

Learning the Importance of Having Fun

What do SCAA's companion animals need? This question immediately brings to mind food, water, shelter and veterinary care – some basics for keeping our 120 Local Project cats and 5 dogs safe and healthy. But on a recent visit to SCAA's Local Project some keen students from Cambridge International School learned the importance of another animal-welfare basic – play time.

Donating your time to pet, brush and play with the social cats (the 5 dogs remaining are not suitable for group interaction) is both rewarding and immensely helpful. Interacting with the social cats provides them with much-needed stimulation and attention to ward off boredom. Social interaction, playing and grooming help reduce stress, fighting and injuries. Encouraging the cats to expend energy in a fun and construction way is especially important in a former hoarding environment.

Cambridge International School

Thanks to teacher (and SCAA adopter) Lindsey White for helping to organize this worthwhile field trip that introduced students with limited experience with pets to the benefits of strengthening the human-animal bond. The students clearly enjoyed this learning experience and we're confident that the cats were equally thrilled with the visit!

To enquire how your class can learn about companion animals and/or contribute towards SCAA's foster and project animal care please contact education@scaashanghai.org.
