  INTRODUCTION

Dear SCAA supporters,

'Tis the season that we and our pampered pets jostle for space next to the heater and on the electric blanket to stay cozy and warm! It's also the season to be thankful for another successful yet challenging year passed and a new year of opportunities ahead.

In 2009, SCAA was extremely privileged to have the support of our generous sponsors and dedicated volunteers, without whom ambitious 2010 goals wouldn't be possible. Some '09 highlights include:

our first overseas grant from the UK RSPCA, one of the oldest and most prestigious animal-welfare organizations in the world

over 75 companion animals adopted to good, permanent homes and dozens more adopted pets moved overseas with their new families

a fantastic year-end gala at the Grand Hyatt that helped raise funds to cover a couple months of care for foster and project animals

Another year calls for another great SCAA calendar with inspiring stories and photos of some of our adopted rescues. 2010 calendars are on sale at: PAW (Xinhua lu @ Kaixuan lu); Pantry Magic (Taojiang lu @ Yue Yang lu); Mian Jiu Fang Japanese Restaurant (Nanjing xilu @ Wulumuqi lu); The Living Room Cafe (Huashan lu @ Wulumuqi lu); online at MTO123.com; and at all SCAA events.

Happy New Year!

Regards,

Lee-Anne Armstrong
SCAA Animal Operations and Foster Care Director

Foster care profile: Frida

Frida

Each month, SCAA will feature the investment needed to get just one of our many foster animals healthy and adoptable. As financial times get tough for everyone, we hope this feature not only accounts for where donations are going, but underscores the critical need for the donations we request on foster care intake and adoption.

Frida is a friendly and affectionate tabby female around 7 months old. Rescued as a sick and hungry little kitten, she needed weeks of shampoo and cream treatment for ringworm (a common fungus) by her dedicated foster parents. Frida is now healthy and is happy to avoid regular bathing! She loves posing for photos and lounging around the house anywhere close by her foster parents.

Donations
Foster care intake donation from Frida's rescuer RMB 500
(future) Adoption donation from Frida's adopters RMB 500
Medical care expenses
Including health checks, flea & worm treatment, vaccinations, spaying, and FIV & FeLV tests RMB 1,531
- RMB 531

More amazing cats in the news!

Yet another reason why we can't say enough to keep your pets indoors! Last month, a Bostonian kitty made headlines with her unfortunate and alleged run-in with a car fan belt. Four-year old Edgar, who'd been missing for days, literally returned home in more than one piece - part of her face had been torn way. After her owner recovered from the shock, she rushed Edgar to the vet, where a talented group of veterinary surgeons successfully reattached her face. Considering most fan belt injuries are immediately fatal, Edgar will surely begin 2010 with one less life under her collar. Me-ouch indeed!

Edgar
Here's wishing Edgar a quick recovery and kudos to one amazing teams of vets!

Donations

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

The UK RSPCA, one of the oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations in the world: £3000 (approx RMB 33,000) RSPCA Overseas Fund Grant Award towards the replacement of the enclosure at SCAA's local project, the purchase of FIV/FeLV tests, and other equipment for foster and project animals. This is SCAA's first grant from the UK RSPCA. Funding for overseas organizations is limited and it's a highly competitive environment, so we are all very proud of this recognition of SCAA's ongoing efforts.

  • Flora and Gene Clyde: Cat play cubes and tunnels; * Feliway synthetic cat pheromone spray; and *Rescue Remedy Pets - natural, herbal drops.

Shanghai hosted Oscar on his World Woof Tour!

WWT

It was a hot and sunny late-September weekend when Oscar the adopted shelter mutt (above centre, with adopter Joanne Lefson) from Capetown, South Africa, passed through Shanghai on his world tour to promote rescued dog adoption and spaying/neutering. SCAA hosted a small gathering of dog owners and pet lovers thanks to a gracious welcome from management and staff at the Lakefront Club in Minhang. A delicious lunch was generously provided by Papa John's pizza. Our canine companions enjoyed the sprawling lawn while kids happily posed with Oscar and snapped up great dog-themed gear.

Thanks to sponsors at the Lakefront Club and Papa John's and all our guests for helping raise funds for SCAA's foster and project animals.

One for our dog lovers...

How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?
By Philip Thomas

Animal Funnies Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?
Animal Funnies Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
Animal Funnies Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
Animal Funnies Rottweiler: Make me.
Animal Funnies Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.
Animal Funnies Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!
Animal Funnies German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.
Animal Funnies Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.
Animal Funnies Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb!
Animal Funnies Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
Animal Funnies Chihuahua : Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Or "We don't need no stinking light bulb."
Animal Funnies Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?
Animal Funnies Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...
Animal Funnies Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry...

How many cats does it take to change a light bulb?

Animal Funnies

Cats do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is: "How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?"

ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF!
